Commercial vs Residential Electrical – Here’s The Difference.

commercial electrical

You may think that commercial electrician work is vastly different from the regular work in residential areas. While it’s true that the two are different, there isn’t a great deal that separates the two. You might be surprised that the most significant difference between residential and other wiring is primarily logistical. Homes and other residential spaces present unique electrical safety and security challenges, and electricians have to plan around this. Join us as we explore just what makes residential settings so different.

Residential

Electricians typically wire homes with 120v circuits for general appliances. However, they also tend to include at least one 240v circuit for things like washers, dryers, and other large appliances. When installing residential electrical wiring, electricians generally cover their work with insulation. This insulation protects residents from hazards such as fires and electrical shock.

For an added layer of protection, electricians ensure that the wiring is safe behind walls. But, of course, working in residential settings is often much harder than elsewhere. Plus, since residential electrical work tends to be more specific than commercial, residential work is often more difficult for plumbers.

Commercial

Electrical access in the commercial world is much simpler as electricians guide all electrical lines through conduits that are easily accessible throughout the space. Usually, electricians use a three-wire system that allows electricians to tap into varying voltage levels regardless of where they are. As commercial areas are generally larger, this ease of access enables electricians to perform jobs faster.

An electrician may have to crawl into an attic or tight space if working on a residential property. As you might imagine, this takes much more time and effort. If electricians had to crawl through the small areas of a commercial building, even a simple job would take as much as a day to complete. Given how often an office building needs small jobs, like outlet installations, wiring commercial buildings in this manner is necessary.
